  • Distance Learning Survival Care Package!

    Funded Jun 1, 2020

I just wanted to thank you for the wonderful donation for my students. They have enjoyed the advantage of having school materials at their homes during this isolating time of distance learning. They love using the manipulatives and working together, virtually, with matching care packages! The students have enjoyed exploring science concepts at home a little easier without needed to rely on material they only had access to when in the school building. My students even took their learning to the next level by creating with their materials on their own. Learning has come to life for these students with special needs and English language learners because of generous people like you.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Santorelli

  • Building Our First Theater Library!

    Funded Feb 18, 2019

Thank you for the gift of theater! In our growing school this is the first time we have an afterschool theater club, and the second year for an 8th grade theater class. In ELA classrooms reading is reserved for novels such as "The Giver" and "I Am Malala." In other classes like science and technology reading mostly consists of articles and procedural directions. With your generous donation theater class and drama club are able to read a whole new kind of literature: drama.

Plays have a unique text structure, where students are able to use more of their imagination since only the dialogue is given. Students were not used to not having an narrator or extensive descriptions of setting and action and struggled quite a bit at first. But throughout practice and watching groups of students interpret the story they started to get very excited about what to add to make a scene exciting and different!

Students learned new creative skills like action, interpretation, emotion, and character voice. Drama club especially loves these plays and we had two first time playwrights independently create scripts of their own during their own time at home. Realizing that students are not familiar with play structure as literature, the ELA department has shown interest in adopting plays into their curriculum for the next school year!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Santorelli

Students need plays! This is the first year with an after school club for drama and Theater class. We have limited performing arts books in our school library that we use, yet there aren't any play scripts to perform. My students will be using these play, such as Diary of Anne Frank and The Triangle Factory Fire Project , to perform in theater class and after school drama club and to connect to their core classes. We do not have any plays, except for two Shakespeare plays which are too advanced for some of my students. They are so excited to start performing.
