Students need to develop creativity and imagination that help them to become great readers, writers, mathematicians and scientists. For example, students draw the story characters after reading aloud. They go to the easel and draw the Little Red Hen, the animals of the story. During the study of plants and trees, students have made different kinds of trees showing their parts and characteristics through drawings. Students use pens and pencils to develop sense of identity when they do self-portraits.
Having paper, acrylics, brushes, students will be able to re-present their knowledge in Math, Science, Language Arts.
I believe that there many ways children express their knowledge , and art is another language to make knowledge visible.
The students are working on doing their self-portrait every month in different kinds of paper and pen, pencils, paints. Wee will start working with them in doing self-portraits in canvas and five them to their mothers at the Mother's Day Celebration. This project has three steps. First, students do their self-portraits on paper and color pencil, second, using acrylics will do the background at the canvas,; third, based on their drawings, they will do their self-portraits on the canvas.
This project will take some time since we will work on small groups, also, the teachers will work with them on their own pace.
The students will make a dictation to the teachers responding the question what did you like the best of your self when you did your self-portrait.
The teachers will make a panel showing the students' dictations, and canvases to before giving to their mothers.
This project will show the student's persistence in developing a project, their language skills, how they answer questions, their fine motor skills and their ability to combine art to academics.
