I've chosen reading materials that will be readily available for my volunteers to use with individual students or a group of students. Time is precious for both the volunteer and the student so I want activities that target specific skills. I use to be a middle school teacher so my resources for 4th grade are limited. I am in the process of creating a reading resource shelf in which volunteers and student helpers can simply grab a labeled bucket and start working with students.
I've also chosen some art materials to use with reading activities. Many of my students have suffered some kind of trauma in their lives so it is challenging to grab their attention and keep it during lessons. I want to create more hands-on reading lessons that include art activities. Many of these students love art so I want to incorporate art into literacy. I'm also working on building my art supplies and hope to create a shelf with all my art materials in labeled bins.
