My school is a Title One urban school in California. Many of the students receive free or reduced lunches and many are English learners. Despite these factors, all of the students in my classroom are excited and ready to learn. They are especially interested in reading and put lots of effort into decoding words, reading new stories and comprehending the plot of stories. Their parents try to help them at home but many parents work at night or are unable to speak English. In my classroom one third of the students were also in my kindergarten classroom last year. It's been great to see them grow from non-reading, non-writing, wiggly 5 year olds to avid readers and prolific writers. (They still are somewhat wiggly, however!)
