At our school, I have the pleasure of working with students in the library. The library is not the same place as it was when I was a student. It is not the same place it was 15 years ago. Our library still has books, and many of them. But we also have art, engineering, technology, problem solving, community engagement, and just about anything that will develop our students into thriving citizens. Diane Alber's books spark children's imaginations and offer a spring board for taking creative risks. With each of my third grade classes, I will use these materials to co-teach a four session unit exploring the techniques book illustrators use to represent the text. Each child will create a 'spot' character, with a personality and a backstory. Then, over the course of the weekly visits, we will explore the different materials to create scenes that tell a brief story. The culminating project will be triptycht displays for each child, accompanied by a 3-4 sentence narrative. The students will be so proud to showcase their work throughout the building, a space that is shared by two charter schools and three nonprofit organizations. The students are excited by this opportunity becuase it allows them to read, write, and create in a unique way.
