Funded Jun 14, 2023I am new to my current school, however I have been a school psychologist for the past 18 years. I have found myself in different neighborhoods with various needs, however my current school is in a very high need area. My school is in a high-crime and impoverished area, where my students are exposed to trauma in their every day lives.
My cozy, calming corner is small but it is a comfortable place for them to calm down, play with a stuffy, or roll around on the rug. Sometimes my students who have sensory needs ask if they can go under the bean bag. It is not very heavy, but it provides some pressure.
The games and breathing boards are also very helpful, because my students come with a significant amount of anxiety and restlessness to school. Their little bodies don't know how to process the pressure they are under and it is difficult for them to express themselves with words, hence the calming tools are so helpful. I can't thank you all enough for helping my students to regulate their emotions and help them have a bit of calm in their tumultuous world.”
With gratitude,
Ms. Salazar
