  • Technology for Digital Art Afterschool Program With SWD.

    Funded Feb 23, 2024

Thank you so much for your contributions to the two iPads and materials for video art-making. There are many ways I've used the iPads and will continue to use them in the art room and during afterschool programs. Last year, students used programs such as Puppet Pals and Green Screen to come up with creative scripts, practice voice control, and work together with peers to collaborate on scenes. In addition, many students used the iPads to find reference images for their art or art tutorials they wanted to follow along with. Finally, we used the green screen to demonstrate how the options are endless with technology and a bit of imagination. Overall, the iPads allowed for us to explore our imaginations and SEL skills.

As I've moved to a new location this year with Kindergarten students, I'd like to use the iPads as a communication tool for students that don't have access to a speech device. I'll also explore digital art options for students who are working with Speech Pathologists and Occupational Therapists to address their goals.

Thank you again for your generous donations to help us secure these materials - we will be making great use of them for a long time to come.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Gluck

  • Essential Art Supplies for Special Needs Students

    Funded Aug 3, 2023

Thank you so much for your generous donations, contributing to the funding of our art cart. Now, we have a fully stocked art cart with scissors, pencils, markers, oil pastels, and paint markers, to name a few items that have carried us through the first few months of school. My students were so excited about the brand new materials, especially the oil pastels and kwik stix, which provides a more accessible way for my students and I to paint without the mess.

Now that we've explored oil pastels with color mixing and gradients, I'd like us to do a project with shading. In addition, now that fall leaves are upon us we can use oil pastels to create texture rubbings. I look forward to receiving the paint (still hasn't arrived) so we can truly mix colors and pair with the oil pastels to create a resist.”

  • Moana Jr. for Diverse Learners

    Funded Apr 25, 2023

Thank you so very much for your support and donations to Moana Jr. for Diverse Learners. Thanks to your generosity, we were able to put on a fully costumed musical for all 5 school sites, while also inviting special guests and friends and family for our annual evening performance.

Not only were we able to use these materials for our evening show, but we ensured we got materials that we can use for future use in our school performances. When our students first put on their costumes and used the props, they were so excited! They were really able to get into character and their costumes gave them confidence to perform to their strengths.

Next year, we will put on another show and use materials again in a new and interesting way. While coming up with the plans for costume and set design, we will consider what we already have to offset costs. We look forward to using our strong costume/prop options for years to come with our developing theatre program.”

  • Elmo Document Camera for Art Demonstrations

    Funded Sep 10, 2022

Thank you so much for funding our schools new greatest technology, the Elmo projector. The Elmo projector is a portable projector that can connect to our laptops and promethean boards. It easily transfers the video onto whatever mode best suits the lesson. I've used it this year for my morning program called Art at Sunrise, in which our entire school community participates in an art lesson weekly. With the Elmo, I can create my own tutorials and demonstrations in real-time, versus what we've previous had to do which is use Youtube videos.

Our students love the more engaging demonstrations and can follow along more easily because I'm able to move at their pace. I've used the projector to create my own clips for class and students are fascinated by the idea that you can film something yourself - now, we have some up and coming film-makers in our midst!

My visual learners especially have warmed to this new technology. It can be repetitive and mindless attempting to engage in virtual learning, but not anymore thanks to the Elmo projector. We can't wait to continue using the Elmo in new and thoughtful ways - for example, we can create our own movies using the projector and delve into a new art medium. Thank you again for your support of our students learning!”

  • The Lion King for Diverse Learners

    Funded Mar 29, 2019

During the 2018-2019 school year, P396K received the Disney Musical's in School grant which provided professional development, coaching, tools and resources to help our arts department produce Disney's The Lion King Kids with 60 elementary school students who are identified as having severe to profound disabilities. The Donor's Choose funding we received helped tremendously to provide materials for costumes and set designs. When the students saw their final costumes they were stunned. Makenna, a 4th grader exclaimed, "I love my Nala suit!!! ROAR!!!!!"

The materials we received allowed our students the costumes they needed to perform on a Broadway stage in Manhattan. For many of our students, it was the first time they had been to a Broadway theater let alone perform in one. One of the most memorable moments during the production was when Christopher, a 5th grade student took on the role of Mufasa. At the start of the process he was meek and timid, barely projecting his voice. By the time of the final performances he had mesmerized an audience of over 200 guests as he stood tall in his elaborate lion headpiece and belted his dialogue and song with clarity and confidence. It is because of the support we received from Donor's Choose that allowed students like Christopher to reach his fullest potential and feel like a star wearing a professional costume and surrounded by an elaborate set design.

This year our students are working on a new musical, Disney's Aladdin Kids. Many of the base wear components such as leggings, black pants and black shirts will be reused as the base for many of the Aladdin costumes to be designed on. The items we received are allowing us to make musical theater a continuous and sustainable tradition within our school. Thank you for making this a possibility.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Gluck

These costumes and props are essential for our musical production of The Lion King. They will allow student to make a connection between our curricular studies of characters in the Africa Savanna. These costumes and props will allow our students to learn about perseverance and self-esteem, two key skills to student success in and out of the classroom. Formally working on these skills in a musical theater environment will also serve to support students in internalizing the self-regulatory behaviors taught in our school-wide Positive Behavioral Intervention and Supports (PBIS) program. The instruments will allow our non-verbal students the opportunity to express their inner voices through music creation and exploration.
