  • More Working Options

    Funded Jul 28, 2023

Thank you so much for your kind donations to my classroom. My students have been very grateful for all the options they have when it comes to working in the classroom. It is amazing to see them deciding on their writing space and picking their surface to write on.

When I first showed my students the new writing surfaces they could use in the classroom, they were overjoyed. This meant they could sit with the overstuffed animals in a writing spot and work on their writing pieces. They also can sit on the beanbags in the library while writing as well, giving them the option to sit in their comfortable spaces.

We are currently working on writing opinion pieces and it is so amazing to see them writing in different places in the classroom. They're not distracted by the things at their desk because they're in their ideal writing spot.

I am so excited to see where they go next with their flexible seating options in the classroom.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Marrufo

  • A New Flexible Seating Choice

    Funded Apr 19, 2023

I would like to thank all of you for your generous donation to my classroom. When my students first saw the floor table and chairs, they were so excited. They had been waiting in anticipation for the order to arrive since I rearranged the classroom to make space for the table. Once the table arrived and was put together, it has been the most popular space in my classroom.

When students select where they wish to sit during reading and writing it is the first area to fill up. The four seats go very quickly. They love to move the back of the chairs into a reclining position so they can lay back to read. They enjoy leaning over the table while they're writing. It has helped to facilitate many conversations during their writing time as they discuss their current draft or what they might write about next.

My current students have enjoyed reading at the table so far. Beginning this week they will start to write narrative stories about their lives. I can imagine that this space in my classroom is going to fill with eager writers putting their ideas down on paper. It is truly inspiring what one small change in seating can do to spark the imagination for students.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Marrufo

Working with students with special needs, we as teachers do everything we can to assist them. Technology is a great help in this area. With the Chromebooks and microphones, my students who have difficulties putting their thoughts on paper or who have fine motor issues can now speak their thoughts to be transferred to text. This eliminates the frustration they feel not getting their thoughts down on paper and gives them the tools they need to complete their writing assignments and feel successful. The Chromebook can also be used to zoom the text in for students who have problems reading small print. For students who speak English as a second language the computers can translate text into their home language. Students who have difficulty reading can use the computers to listen to stories and have directions read to them through text-to-speech. State testing is done on the computer and having computers in the classroom would open doors for my students to become familiar with the skills necessary to take the test as well as meeting their diverse needs throughout the year.
