Funded Sep 5, 2015I want to thank you for the generous donation to our classroom. My students and I were overwhelmed with all of the items provided to us from this project. Teaching students with disabilities is an extremely rewarding job. The middle school students I teach are all functioning on a kindergarten through second grade level. For this reason, a variety of visual, kinesthetic, and tiered text levels are necessary resources for our classroom. The social studies centers provided from this project allow the students to escape to a different time in history. For example, when learning about Native American tribes, students are able to compare artifacts such as wigwams, canoes, and totem poles that are very realistic. I believe many of my students now find social studies to be one of their favorite subjects!
The literacy centers have made my life as a teacher easier and have made the learning process for my students exciting and engaging. The students love when we break into our reading groups. While working within their leveled groups they are able to learn and practice necessary literacy skills. While the lower leveled students manipulate letter pieces to work on phonics skills, the higher leveled students work on reading comprehension strategies.
All of my students struggle with social skills. They have difficulty picking up social cues and are at the beginning stages of conversational skills. Some of the materials provided from this project have made a significant impact in their social skills. Classroom routines now include an open discussion period in which the social skills conversation starters are used. The students are able to ask one another interesting and easy to comprehend questions in order to engage in active discussions. They are learning how to take-turns when speaking, make eye-contact if possible, and use loud, clear voices.
The impact of this project is immeasurable. What my students are learning both academically and socially is significant. It is through the help of the resources this project provided due to your generosity. I love seeing them grow as learners, it is especially wonderful to see their excitement when using all of the new resources. Thank you for your generosity, it is making a difference in the lives of these students.”
With gratitude,
Mrs. V.
