  • Engineers Rugby: Going Forward

    Funded Jan 27, 2022

Thank you to the Schell family - and Dick's for matching this DC campaign.

Our first season of 15s rugby for the boys is in the books albeit not as match-packed as we had hoped. We had many challenges but the club still had fun when things worked out for us. The girls spring 7s squad had 3 tourney opportunities and the boys were able to play two matches using a mish-mash of jerseys from the past as jerseys slated for April from this DC campaign did not arrive until after the season was over in June. (And we are waiting for them to be delivered to the classroom - pics coming soon.) Our final match girls 7s was stopped due to lightning - and the boys were unable to take the field afterward because of which.

As a city school without a home field to play on, and the city parks department's limited number of fields for rectangular sports and time constraints on field permits for league teams who could visit us coming from a distance, it was tough for us to host matches - we simply couldn't.

This spring, the school's newly renovated field only permitted in-season PSAL teams to practice and play on the field as well. (Our school rugby club will likely be unable to use the school's field in the future anyway.) Furthermore, our league schedule was not friendly to our school breaks; a pre-made, weekly match-up calendar that didn't consider city school team breaks put many matches out of reach for us after other teams scheduled contests accordingto the weekly calendar.

Nonetheless, your generosity will allow us to continue 'going forward' - and look awesome doing so - as we build and re-build this rugby club from the ground up, and look overcome the outside challenges as the years pass by.

    Stay tuned!”

    With gratitude,

    Coach Schell

  • Grassroots Rugby: Growing the Sport in NYC

    Funded Mar 10, 2020

The past few years have taken a lot away from us - in all kinds of ways. However, it has also allowed many of us to reflect and appreciate things that we may take for granted - team sports being one.

For the first time in a long time, our rugby teams took to the pitch and played against other teams. We were able to do so in new rugby kits from Paladin - and we looked great!

Both my girls rugby and my boys rugby teams had opportunities to play in three of the five scheduled sevens tournaments, which was a nice way to work our way back into the game after such a long pause. This spring, we finally get to play our first season of 15s rugby.

Thank you for helping us get this far. We look forward to our rugby future and, on behalf of the team, I would like to send our appreciation to the Fans of Rugby who support what we do.

    All the best 🏉”

    With gratitude,

    Coach Schell

  • Engineering Rugby at BTHS!

    Funded Apr 9, 2019

Sports are a worthwhile investment -- that is why parents and coaches do what they do and gladly dip into their own bank accounts to make sure our kids have memorable experiences growing up. However, many teams still depend on the kindness of strangers.

I would like to extend a big thank you to our supporters on this campaign on behalf of the rugby team and myself. Because of your kind gestures we were able to outfit the team with two really awesome rugby kits from Rhino. Both the girls 'sevens rugby' and boys 'sevens rugby' teams wore their uniforms well in three out of the four tournaments for our fall 'sevens series' this past autumn. Bus costs limited our ability to travel to all of them, but we look great together as a team both on and off the field because of you.

Additionally, both of our high school boys rugby and girls rugby teams are full-contact and we must work safely through progressions to get to that full-contact stage. So we also added more tackle bags, wave shields, and a ruck pad to the collection which aided the cause. The pads allowed us to learn and practice correct techniques specific to rugby and, in turn, helped us develop our contact game while maximizing player safety. Players love hitting the different types of training pads.

It's clear we could not make this happen without the generosity from supporters who I like to collectively refer to as 'Fans of Rugby'. Thank you again for your contributions that help create experiences which truly last a lifetime.

Now we are off to prepare for the spring rugby seasons: Girls 7s and the inaugural year of Boys 15s!”

    With gratitude,

    Coach Schell
