The 3 iPads that I am asking for will be used across the district to help most of 120 or so kids who need speech therapy services. My students used to have access to iPads in speech therapy, however, we have original iPad minis that stopped accepting iOS updates a few years ago. We experienced budget cuts to our department and new iPads were not on the list to update. We are no longer able to add new apps or update our current out-of-date apps.
Imagine not being able to use your voice to communicate, having trouble putting your thoughts in order to make a comprehensive sentence, or people not understanding you because you can't make all of your speech sounds. Many of my students face these struggles and others as they try to interact with the world around them. We use technology in therapy to work on these skills. Some of my students need devices to talk for them and we practice on iPad apps to learn skills to use alternative communication devices and to help decide which device is best suited for a specific student.
I use many methods to help my kids work toward better communication skills. The iPad is one tool that offers flexibility and helps keep students engaged creating a fun learning environment that will help them be successful.
