Our students will be so excited to learn that we will soon have these books in our library. These books are loved by our students who love to read and our students who have not yet developed that lifelong love of reading. 2024-25 NC Children's Book Award Picture Book Nominees
Funded Oct 3, 2024Thank you for supporting our "2024-25 NC Children's Book Award Picture Book Nominees" project. Due to your generosity, students have 24 additional NC Children's Book Award Picture Books they may check out and read.
Every year, our students enjoy the NC Children's Book Award Nominees. Each time we read a new nominee, we have more students who want to check out the book than copies we own. We will be reading these books from July through March. Students will vote for their favorite book in March or April.
We have already been reading Acorn Was a Little Wild, I Cannot Draw a Horse, I Want 100 Dogs, and This Story is Not About a Kitten. The students are thrilled to have extra copies of each book to check out and take home to read again. Students have been wondering about and investigating pets and how to care for them after reading I Want 100 Dogs and This Story is Not About a Kitten. We learned about the life cycle of an oak tree from the fun book, Acorn Was a Little Wild, and compared it to the life cycle of a squash in another book in our library. Students laughed through I Cannot Draw a Horse and had a chance to practice drawing many of the characters in the book using the author's website as a guide. I look forward to sharing the rest of the books and doing related activities from January through March. Students love all the books and also check out books related to the books so it is easy to see how these books are supporting and encouraging a love of reading and learning. Every year, I am surprised at which book gets the most votes at our school and for the state of North Carolina. I am sure the students' choices will surprise me again!
Thank you for your help encouraging the love of reading through funding these new library books. Our past North Carolina Children's Book Award Nominees continue to be checked out and loved years after they were nominees. I know this year's nominees will continue that pattern. Thank you again for helping to fund this project so students may not only listen to the books but may also check them out and read them with their families, book buddies, and other students this year and in the future.”

Cookbooks and More to Encourage Reading and Doing!
Funded Jan 18, 2024Thank you for supporting our "Cookbooks and More to Encourage Reading and Doing!" project. Due to your generosity, students have access to 20 new nonfiction cookbooks and books focusing on related topics! With these books, we are making progress, and this part of our 600s section has improved in copyright age by at least 4 years! More importantly, we are also better able to meet the reading interests and needs of our students who want cookbooks.
I want you to know students are loving these books! Soon after students started checking out our new cookbooks, I received an encouraging email from a parent. She wrote "Just wanted to share how much [my children] have enjoyed these cookbooks! They have looked through each one every night and together we made 3 recipes today with more on the menu each night next week! " Another day, I found two students searching our online catalog for "foodbooks." Both students checked out a cookbook when I showed them our newly updated cookbook section. I continually have students asking for cookbooks. With these new cookbooks, most days the students are now able to find one they want. These books are a hit with our youngest and oldest students and our students from all types of backgrounds.
Due to the addition of the books from this project, students and their families have access to a great selection of cookbooks that they are not only reading but many are using to make items at home with their families. It has been very exciting to see the response!

Due to your generosity, students have access to 20 new comics (graphic novels) to check out from our library! Our students love these books! Although our Graphic Novel section is less than 4% of our collection, this section makes up more than 16% of our circulation this year and in this month has made up more than 17% of our circulation.
