Mathematics in the fourth grade classroom is always a struggle. This is the first year they are learning to divide large numbers, the first year they are dealing with very complex word problems, etc. Something my classroom is missing to support this struggle is a more hands-on approach to the subject. I am asking for Base-10 blocks, pattern blocks and connect cubes to help support students in my mathematics instruction by giving them tools that they can manipulate. Studies show that finding a more concrete understanding of math concepts first, before moving on to more complex algorithms, supports students in their math instruction. I can use these tools for every operation in math, which will give me the ability to support learners all year long. At my Title One school, most of my students speak English as a second language. This will greatly help their development in math, even though they are still learning the English language. I have also requested a game in my order, connect four. Not only will this support my students in finding patterns and perseverance, it will also give them an option when we are required to have indoor recess. We are located in Utah and it is often too cold to go outside.
