Education is changing every single day, and so are the interests of my students. Students in my classroom like to read about historical events, and although much is taught about Hitler, our students are blissfully unaware of Stalin and the victims of his reign of terror. The book "Between Shades of Gray" is a novel of hope and resilience for individuals in the darkest of circumstances, and it teaches more than one lesson about enduring through hardships beyond one's control. Our school does not currently offer this high interest title for summer reading, so I would like to assign this book for our required summer reading. The novel "Between Shades of Gray" is a devastatingly sad story of fictional characters from Lithuania who were forced to work in Stalin's work camps in Siberia; What makes it even more heartbreaking is that this story reflects a true story of a genocide that took the lives of over 20 million people; a little known and little taught part of history. Students who read these novels become more engaged and begin to read more for enjoyment. Helping students begin to learn that reading is fun helps my students to become better readers, which will help our overall rate of success in high school and beyond. Historical fiction books are a gateway to better reading skills for reluctant readers. With your assistance and gifts of these books, my students will enjoy their summer reading rather than dread it.
