My second graders are sweet little souls on a learning journey every day. Part of the foundation in building successful students in academics is teaching them community, kindness, and positive self-esteem. Multiple times a day we gather together in an area of the room for lessons and activities. We call this spot "the rug area". We have a little long running class joke now that we "pretend" to sit on the rug.... because there actually isn't a rug there, lol. This sitting rug covered in words of kindness will bring a colorful sense of community to our classroom. A reminder to the kids that our class gatherings on the rug whether it be story time or a math lesson, we always sit on and next to friendship and kindness.
