Why Are There Never Any Good Books To Read?

Funded Feb 14, 2019

My name is Michelle Siedschlag. I teach English as a Second Language at Webb Middle School in Reedsburg, WI. Most of my students receive free and reduced lunch and breakfast. Several of my students have been living in the country for less than a year. A number of my students have moved from areas of the world undergoing political strife or areas that have been hit by natural disasters. None of my students have easy access to books.

My school and community both have wonderful libraries. However, many of my students are interested in reading popular titles and series that are often checked out or they do not have transportation to Many of them are excited to read, but are unable to get the books they desire in their hands. None of my students had ever been given the opportunity to order any book they desire before I submitted this project.

As the books started to arrive, my students could not wait to read the books they had chosen. I have never seen this before with this group of children. As students are finishing the books they chose, their classmates are also getting excited to read based on reports from their classmates about the new books. There is something magical about having the power to select any book you want. This magic will carry over into my students lives by improving their literacy and English vocabulary. Thank you for making this happen.”

With gratitude,

Mrs. Siedschlag
