Our second graders come from a variety of backgrounds, but some have very limited experiences due to financial constraints. Using a variety of science hands-on activities, we will enhance our learning experience to bring more excitement and engagement to our classroom. We are seeking some activities to enrich our rock and minerals unit, physics unit, life cycles, and reading engagement that ties it all to real life. Our hope is to spark an interest in a subject that can drive their desires to explore and find answers to their questions.
From rocks and minerals and exploring living things, to learning more about how things move, these activities will help our class build, explore, and problem-solve. Using Ward's Rock and Minerals Testing Kit, we will be able to determine what properties the rocks/minerals have in order to identify them. To help gain an understanding of the laws of motion, we are excited to incorporate Engineer-A-Coaster as well as a Nasco Simple Machines set. Exploring life sciences, we will be using a Life Cycle of a Butterfly Set that encapsulates the parts of the life cycle of a butterfly in a polymer that allows the kids to view them in their hands. We will be using the Nasco Common Bird Tracks Set to focus on projects that discuss the variety of species and why they are specific to their survival. Finally, our Ultimate Habitat project will allow us to grow plants in the classroom any time of year and observe growth as well as explore the varying habitats needed for survival. To tie all of this together, we are requesting a subscription to TIME for kids. This is an excellent newspaper type magazine that brings current events and discoveries to students through a fun and engaging format.
