The use of engaging, hands-on, interactive seating materials will entice students to come to speech sessions and to engage in activities. During this pandemic, we moved to remote learning and it has impacted my special education students greatly. The way my students learn best is by using hands-on resources within small group settings. Each small group is tailored to the students' unique needs. Many students have regressed in their individual progress because they were unengaged at home. I would love to use this alternate seating to help them be comfortable enough to communicate more in academic, social-emotional, or community settings. A more sensory-friendly environment in our speech room will help them to feel welcome, and like they are taking a break from the stresses of life and school. It will benefit them when they need something to help calm their bodies down. These students will also be able to better communicate with the use of the emotion blanket/bears, and focus on work and the required tasks rather than distractions with more sensory-friendly seating, plush areas, and river rocks to balance on while describing what they are doing, talking to others socially, and enjoying sessions. All students, regardless of their sensory needs, can benefit from these items.
