These sets will support hands-on learning we strive to promote in the high school setting. Students will study a roller coaster designed by professionals, then use what they learned to design their own roller coaster. Working in groups of 4 to 6, my students will collaborate together to not only design a K’nex roller coaster on paper, but they will also be able to test their design by constructing it with the sets requested. The K’nex roller coaster sets will provide my students with the opportunity to explore real-world applications of geometry and trigonometry in the classroom. In addition to mathematics, students will gain experience in creating and constructing a blueprint, solving problems, building team cohesion and managing their time. Once student roller coasters are completed, a team of local engineers from our Partners In Education group will visit to provide feedback, encouragement and answer questions the students have about engineering and product design. My plan is to start with a small group of students (20) this year, adjust the lesson/activity based on results, and expand to all classes in subsequent years.
