My 5th grade students typically come from a socio-economically disadvantaged background. We are an urban, Title I school in California. 82% are enrolled in the free lunch program. We also service many foster children. Approximately 60% are English Learners, the majority of which are Latinos. This means that for many students, their parents cannot help them with their reading. They often do not come from families who value reading. Therefore the responsibility of giving my students access to great literature often falls solely on the teacher and schools.
