Becoming Amazing Readers!
Funded Dec 19, 2019This book has been a wonderful experience for my students. Because so many of them are from broken homes and traumatic backgrounds, my students found Naomi Leon so relatable. That's book opened the door to deep conversations, classroom circles, and some pretty raw emotions. So, in addition to being a great read, we were able to bring some social-emotional learning to the class and make connections to daily life. The book was used during a leveled-reading period, where all students are reading at basically the same level. In addition to reading, we did a one-pager at the end of the unit.”

Reading Rocks!
Funded Sep 20, 2019My class enjoyed our unit with Dear Mr. Henshaw so much! Leigh Botts is a very relatable main character who faces many of the same problems we all face: the divorce of his parents, issues at school, and loneliness, just to name a few. During the course of the unit, students were able to participate in group discussions about how to solve and survive daily problems. In the book, Leigh interviews his favorite author. My students got to choose a favorite adult on campus and interview that person, and then present the interview to the class. As a result, we learned a lot about staff members on our campus. It was a lot of fun! Our culminating project was a "one-pager" which is a poster that combines art with quotes.”
