  • Building Confidence in Reading Through Board Games

    Funded Oct 26, 2023

We have had so much fun learning with our new games and resources. My students learned to play the four phonics board games- Jet Boat Harbor, Tiki Challenge, Roller Coaster Craze, and Keeper of the Castle. It has reinforced long and short vowels, word blending, and digraphs. After we learned how to play and they became experts, they were able to check out the games to take to their classrooms. It was not only great for their decoding and encoding skills, it led to greater confidence because they were the leaders in the games.

We also had take home games to do with parents. Students enjoyed learning how to use the blue bag games in groups and then they were able to share those games with their family members. It led to good conversations with parents who are not always as involved with their students.

I appreciate your donations and thoughtfulness in partnering with me to bring these experiences to students who are significantly behind in Reading.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Burns

  • Multi-Sensory Early Reading Materials

    Funded Aug 12, 2021

Thank you so much for your support! The students have loved using the new multi-sensory tools and games during Reading Intervention. I knew that the items would be beneficial to have in the classroom based on research, but now I can testify how sensory games can imprint skills quickly and permanently.

The students especially love the Roll and Red Dice Game and the Phonics Centers. They are experts at many of the activities, and they love to teach new students how to use them. They never get tired of practicing their foundational reading skills in this way.

Many of the students we see in our groups have moved past students in their homeroom classroom in reading and spelling. Part of the reason for their growth is you helped provide sensory activities we did not have the funds to purchase. Thank you for answering the call to give. You have made a difference.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Burns

  • At Home/School Learning to Read

    Funded Jun 4, 2020

Thank you so much for partnering with the Donor's Choose program to purchase distance learning materials for my students.

Leadership guru John Maxwell said, "Small disciplines repeated with consistency every day lead to great achievements gained slowly over time." These materials are that consistency for my students. Our students have already, because of covid, been virtual, in person, and back to virtual. The majority of my student's could not afford to buy these specific supplies. With your donations, I was able to create 50 bags of supplies to deliver to kids to use at home. When we came back to school they brought them to use in school, as well.

Most years I have about 6 sets of supplies because I do not see more than 6 kids at a time. Your generous donations helped to keep my students safe from spreading germs, and gave them something familiar. Thank you so much.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Burns

  • Summer Reading/Feeding

    Funded Feb 28, 2019

With your donation, I was able to purchase the books on the cart. I took the cart to one of our local parks where we also have a summer feeding project.

I allowed students to check out books, and I provided free summer reading help for my identified kids. I identified the students that have had a steep summer slide in the past.

I went to the park 9 Thursdays for 2 hours. 100% of the identified students kept their reading level where it was at the end of school. Five of the students grew 2 or more levels.

A result I didn't plan for was the relationship I developed with parents and grandparents who brought their students. Many asked questions about how to help their child be a more successful reader, and those relationships lasted into the school year. Thank you so much for your donation. It was a meaningful project.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Burns

Each year, the students I work with experience a "summer slide." This means they lose valuable reading skills over the summer that must be retaught in the fall. The main reason for the summer slide is not having access to quality books to read. I have partnered with our district's summer feeding program. These are designated locations (i.e. parks, schools) where students can go to get a meal for free during the months school is out of session. Two of those designated areas are walking distance for most of our students. Each Tuesday and Thursday, I would like to bring books to these places for our students to check out or read with me. This way they will be able to practice their reading skills all summer, and return to school ready to move forward with their learning. This past year several students, especially ESL students, did not catch up to the level they were in the Spring until November. All of these students live walking distance from the areas I want to serve. Because I develop such a close relationship with students, I believe that many of them will be excited to come and read with me and to check out a book to read. These kids are typically not able to go the Public Library for a variety of reasons. I want to bring the books to them.
