I am the school nurse at my school of 750 elementary students. These students are from a low-income area and most come to school without eating breakfast at home. If they arrive by 7:45, they are able to eat the school-provided breakfast at no cost. Breakfast and lunch are provided to 100% of the students at no cost. However, many of the students arrive late-and hungry. Most of these student are sent to me, many with "headaches" and "stomachaches." The first question I always ask them is "Have you eaten breakfast?" If they haven't, I have to figure out a way to get them food. Our two assistant principals try to keep snacks readily available in their offices, nut are often times in meetings and/or are down to just fruit snacks. We are in desperate need of more food here to give to the students. I spend my own money regularly on saltine and graham crackers for the students who are sick and often give those to the kids who are hungry also. But we need more resources. We need more help. I am asking you to please help by sending the snacks that I have placed on the order form for our students so that they can have a variety to choose from and can go without being hungry. It will help so much. Thank you for your consideration.
