I work with elementary school students that struggle in reading. Every year there are many students in my school that are unable to read on grade level. This weakness in reading impacts their ability to learn grade level curriculum across all subject areas. It also significantly effects the students confidence and enjoyment of learning. In the past couple of years, the amount of students that are unable to read on grade level has risen significantly due to the Covid pandemic. Student's learning has suffered due to the increased absences of teachers, staff, and the students themselves, as a result of illness. The mask and social distancing requirements have also impacted the way that students learn. Small group reading intervention became more difficult because of these regulations and as a result the students with reading difficulties have fallen farther and father behind.
I will use the Sounds Sensible program and the Spire reading materials to help students improve their reading skills, and hopefully compensate for the difficulties created by the pandemic. Our school currently uses these programs in small group reading intervention and they have proven effective for improving reading outcomes. However, due to the increased needs of our students we do not have enough of the Sounds Sensible and Spire reading materials to meet our needs. Please help us get the supplies we need to help our students. Thank you.
