"In Lak'ech" is a Mayan precept that means: "You are my other me." Providing students with books that represent diverse perspectives will help them to understand themselves, each other, and the world around them. Middle school is a time of transition and rapid development: students are still children and at the same time are *becoming* young adults. Book club, or literature circle, will allow students greater access to narratives--both fictional and real--that interest them and fit their reading levels. Through reading different stories, our class conversations will be enriched. We will discuss identity, belonging, and the craft of narrative-writing in small groups and as a whole class. Giving students choices will allow for a diversity of voices.
