I am trying to get some STEM items for my students. The BB-8 Droids I found are perfect for not only learning some rudimentary block coding, but a performance can be made with these little droids, by using them as a kind of remote controlled puppet. With these droids, my students can learn how to program a performance, which is something important nowadays with technology evolving in the ways it has been.
The video camera is essential for my classes because as part of the high school curriculum, I need to teach filmmaking. The camera is something that will allow the students to learn how to handle a camera, as well as know how to set up and frame a shot. Using less antiquated technology will greatly help my students in being prepared for the inevitably more advanced technology they may have to use at other schools or even in college.
Anyone who has participated in a high school play knows that the technical side of a production can be as demanding, if not more so, than the action on stage. Memorizing lines and finessing blocking challenges actors and directors, but any play, revue, or even one-act depends on highly trained technicians whose work is increasingly based on STEM principles.
Lighting, sound design, set building, and other aspects of theatre depend on technical staff and volunteers with strong bases of knowledge in STEM. Knowing how to paint a flat or carry props and sets on and off stage does not suffice in college and professional theatre, when large productions depend on skill sets as diverse as engineering, physics, and chemistry. These items will be a nice way to start integrating STEM into my classes.
