While living in Texas I was introduced to the idea of drum circles. The drum circle has been a form of community music making for thousands of years. In it, students sit together in a circle, with each member of the circle having a drum, and they create music together. Our school currently does not have enough drums for every student in a class to drum at the same time, but we are getting close! It is an amazing feeling to all be drumming at the exact same time, together as a group. This project would give us enough drums for every child in the class to be a part of the drum circle. Not only am I excited about this because it's a hands on activity that students are excited about, and that I can teach music concepts through, but because it has been shown to help students dealing with trauma. Our district has been learning a lot about trauma this year and how it literally changes the human brain. One of the main activities listed to help students that have experienced trauma is rhythmic movement – like with a drum. Research is showing that the repetitive sound and motion of drumming helps to calm their brain and bring them into a state that is more conductive for learning.
