Students at our school last year began a petition requesting more books to read that were written by Hispanic authors and contain Hispanic protagonists. Students of all races signed it. Sixty-eight percent of my targeted reading period is Hispanic. One-hundred percent of this period are at least three grade levels below their grade equivalent reading level. The majority of them do not like to read or are reluctant readers. Cue the challenge! Half the battle is finding a text that holds the interest of a reader. Charlie Hernandez and the League of Shadows by Ryan Calejo will offer the opportunity to teach reading skills, while students are engaged with a relevant and authentic text. Students I've known who have read it, all have found it very enjoyable. It is on a fourth grade reading level, which would be right on target for my group, while still offering a challenge for those who are on a third grade reading level. This is an engaging book that contains some Spanish phrases within it, sometimes translated, sometimes not. My students will identify with this. It also contains Spanish myth and folklore, which they will also identify with and find amusing. Having found a book that has earned the approval of students on various reading levels and interest, has spurned the desire within me to provide this for all my students, especially my very special and targeted reading class. Please consider funding this Donors Choose proposal. Thank you!
