There is a wealth of data that shows that when kids can pick books of their interest and their level, their reading will grow exponentially more than solely reading whole-class novels. It is imperative that kids practice reading and the best way to get them to do that is to give them high-interest, engaging books to choose from. Just 10 minutes of reading a day can increase a students' word exposure by 104% (Beers and Probst 2017, 135). Furthermore, the more students read, the better writers they become. Through this project, books like Screaming Quietly and American Panda can show students mirrors into their own life to explore the depth of world; in addition, books like Marrow Thieves may open a window into the world to help students understand others better. I have always said that it is better to explore hard topics in a fictional setting so that students are more equipped to handle them in their real lives. Creating a reading habit and finding a love for reading will assure that students continue to learn and become good, active citizens for the rest of their lives.
