I begin my first year of teaching in September, and I want to give my students a classroom to be proud of! I just received my MAT in June and have since been planning for my classes and shopping for school supplies. I have found that many of my friends and family never realized that most teachers don’t receive a budget or stipend for school supplies and must instead pay to build their classrooms themselves, which can be a big financial challenge when trying to create an engaging class from the day 1. The materials that your money buy will help immediately with the students' exploration of the monumental changes during the Industrial Revolution as well as the themes, symbols, and characters in the books The Giver and Lord of the Flies. They will use these supplies to create projects that compare a societal aspect (i.e. immigration, wealth inequality, technology) of their choice from the Industrial Revolution to its counterpart today for the social studies block. They will also use these supplies to record and share their study of the literary elements of the dystopian literature they read, which they will later use to compose their summative task of writing a dystopian short story. As small as these supplies may be, they can all be used to help students collaborate and learn amongst each other. What they learn from each other will inform how they demonstrate their understandings individually.
