I Wish I Had a Kidney...Table!

I want to thank you SO much for all of your generous donations. The students were counting down the days until our kidney table arrived. When they saw our name and room number on the huge boxes that were delivered, they came running up from lunch to tell me!
Because of your help, we were able to re-arrange our classroom to make it more student centered; giving them more room to move about during group work activities as well as giving them a new home for small group instruction that DEFINITELY beats sitting on the floor!
Our table has been used during family Friday activities like you can see in the pictures I have shared. More importantly, with state tests quickly approaching, our table came just in time to be able to start small group test prep instruction. The students love being called back to the table and working together. They know there is always something new and exciting awaiting them.

I have been gathering my small groups either on the floor in my meeting area or at a very tiny conference table. This is not optimal, as you can imagine. Having students sit and work on the floor does not allow them to focus the way that they should. A kidney-shaped table would be a dream for my small-group instruction. The benefit of this type of table is that the teacher is within an arm's reach of each student. Children are more focused when they are in close proximity of the teacher, and when children are focused, they are able to make greater strides in gaining the reading skills in which they are lacking. When children feel closely connected to the teacher and to one another, they are more apt to stay engaged in the work at hand. Working at this group table will allow the teacher to quickly scan each student's work and to provide immediate instruction.
