  • Graphic Novels for Reluctant Readers

    Funded Jul 7, 2023

I wish you could have heard the cheers from each class when I revealed the new graphic novels that you made it possible for us to buy. They were were sooooo excited. The new book shelf is their first stop each visit to the library. I have to limit one book from the new shelf at a time so all of the students get a chance to enjoy the new books. They just can't get enough.

I don't know what I'd do without Donors like you. There are so many wonderful and exciting books coming out for kids now and I can't even buy a fraction of them with my annual budget. Your donations are building and excitement for and a love of reading. This will stay with them their whole lives. I can't thank you enough for making this happen!”

  • Nonfiction Fans Need New Choices

    Funded Mar 30, 2023

The kids couldn't be more excited about these new nonfiction titles! They are constantly checked out and have drawn attention to other exciting books that we have in that section. We were able to get such a variety of topics that there is literally something for everyone.

I can't tell you how much I appreciate your support. With school budgets getting cut more and more all the time, it is impossible to give my students all of the exciting books that I know will inspire them to love reading. If you can build an appetite for books it will never leave them. You make this a possibility!”

  • Positive Behavior Can Turn Into Books!

    Funded Mar 1, 2022

We are so happy to have this Book Vending Machine at our school. The idea that our kiddos are excited to earn books through good behavior is thrilling on so many levels. We can't wait until it is doing regular business.

The vending machine arrived at the very end of the school year so we decided to wait until the new school year to get things up and running. Over the summer we got funding locally to fill the machine with books. The students are so excited about getting to use it.

We have several students saving up their points to get books! We are planning a big ribbon cutting ceremony and celebration on the day that the first students have earned their free book token. I will add more pictures once that happens.”

  • Easy Reader Books to Help Bridge the Learning Gap

    Funded Feb 18, 2022

I cannot begin to express how wonderful this project has been for our library. The students have been beyond excited about the new books. They stay checked out regularly.

These new books have taken an old and tired section of the library and turned it into a vibrant and engaging area where students can find things they want to read at an appropriate level. It is perfect for our readers that are transitioning from being read to into being independent readers.

Thanks to these new books beginning readers and our struggling readers are excited about the choices they have instead of being embarrassed. I know these new books will continue to help us grow reading skills AND a love of reading!”

  • Books to Support Social and Emotional Learning at Our School

    Funded Oct 21, 2021

Thank you so much for helping me provide these important books for our school. Social/Emotional Learning is more important than ever. Children have faced unprecedented hardships in the last few years. Schools are being looked to as a support for these essential skills.

These books not only allow our students a chance to check out books that connect with a need they might be feeling at that time. They are perfect mentor texts for teachers to share with their class to build emotional understanding for themselves and for those around them. It gives them tools and skills to work through hard times and builds empathy.

I don't know what we would do without the help of Donors Choose and all of those that have supported us during this hard time.”

  • Nonfiction Necessities

    Funded Oct 21, 2021

I can't thank you enough for helping us to reinvigorate our Nonfiction Section. With funding cut more and more it is impossible to keep all areas of our library new and exciting. When students are excited about the books offered they are more excited about reading and more likely to read during free time.

Since these books arrived the students can't get enough of them. Even some of my most challenging students are excited to pick their books now. I can't keep these books on the shelf.... and that is a good problem to have.

The illustrations and subdivision of text into smaller sections is key to getting struggling or reluctant readers to feel comfortable reading on their own. I am hopeful that I can continue to build this section in our library.”

  • Graphic Novels: a Springboard for Struggling Readers

    Funded Sep 24, 2021

I'm finally building enough of a Graphic Novel section that all of my students can find books that appeal to them. The students have been so excited to try all of the new books. They have been coming to swap out books multiple times a week because they are enjoying them so much. This kind of excitement is what builds lifelong readers.

Without the generosity of donors like you, I wouldn't be able to maintain the level of engagement and excitement that I have in my library. I don't know where I'd be without you. You have truly touch many lives with this project!”

  • Easy Readers for Early Fluency

    Funded Sep 23, 2021

I can't thank you enough for helping us get so many new easy reader books. Our Quick Read Section (named as to not turn off older students that need those books) was very out-dated. There were very few titles that the students were actually excited to check out.

Since we have gotten these new books students are swarming to that section and are excitedly showing each other what they got. It makes me so happy to know that they are getting books that they can actually read themselves. This is how they will build ability and fluency.

This wouldn't be possible without the help of wonderful people like you.

    Thank you so very much!!!!!”

  • Graphic Novels to Get Kids Hooked on Reading!

    Funded Aug 12, 2021

The excitement in our Library over these new books has been through the roof ever since the Amazon boxes arrived. The students couldn't wait to see and check out the new books. I processed the books as quickly as possible and set up a special display so the students could see how many wonderful new choices they had.

Students are allowed to check out one of the new graphic novels at a time so that as many students as possible get to enjoy them at once. Within the first week of being out for circulation, almost every book is checked out, several have had multiple check outs already. These books are already working their magic by building our students' confidence and stamina for reading.

With such a limited budget, it would have been impossible for me to add this many high interest books to the library this year without your help. I can't begin to tell you how much I appreciate it and how happy you have made soooooo many students.”

  • Fun But Safe Places To Read In The Library!

    Funded May 4, 2021

I can't thank you enough for funding this project. Right now we have so many restrictions that much of the "fun" of school has been lost. The students aren't allowed to enjoy reading on my window seats or bean bag chairs as they are too hard to sanitize. These inflatable hammocks offer a wonderful solution.

I can't tell you how excited the students and staff were about this resource for our school. At this time teachers can borrow the set to take their students outside to learn in a way that allows for plenty of spacing and even mask breaks. It has been such a treat to get out of our crowded-feeling classrooms and enjoy a taste of freedom again.

I'm also using these to take classes out for reading breaks. It gives the students a chance to look forward to their DEAR time (Drop Everything And Read). I strongly believe that if we can make the experience of reading exciting we remove some of the mental barriers that children have against it. Once they change their outlook then they are open to really enjoy reading.

This projects is helping our school in so many ways. Thank you again for all of your support!”

Many of my students struggle to focus and succeed in class. A lot of that is because they have too much energy and not enough opportunities to move. I feel strongly that if they had a positive outlet to get some energy out and move they would be able to return to class better able to achieve. Many students already take "breaks" with other teachers in the school as helpers. I think that this project will give them another option when they need to work of steam. As the librarian, I am always encouraging our students to get excited about reading. I would like to have this Desk Bike set up in the library as a place they can come work off some of that energy while they read. I really think that this Read and Ride station will be a huge benefit to countless students at our school and serve two purposes at once.
