Movement is a natural part of development allowing children opportunities to understand where their bodies are in space, engage in their environment and with peers, and to learn cause and effect. Research indicates that lots of small movements throughout the day is a key to medical benefits such as improved bone health, boost in metabolism, and improved muscle tone. Increased circulation due to movement enhances blood flow to the brain, increasing alertness while decreasing stress and fatigue. Bodies of all physical abilities are meant to move … and flexible seating allows movement within a learning environment. Runtz Mesh Ball Chairs (items requested) are a modified concept of a therapy ball mounted on a stable surface. The ball component allows gentle bouncing and movement, while the over-lying fabric and base allow stability. Some targeted students have a lot of “wiggles” and focus best when allowed to move while working/learning. Other students have mobility delays with low muscle tone; while sitting on flexible-seating chairs, trunk muscles and internal sensory organs necessary for body awareness are activated, enhancing alertness. These chairs will be used both at group time activities and at table time activities, dependent on the focus during the specific activity.
