Students should have opportunities to embody history, the people and paths forged which enable us all to enjoy certain freedoms. We are living in a world that seems to ignore its history in exchange for memes and tweets. Experiencing the inspired words and actions of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., through traditional African American music and spoken word will assist students in "seeing" history. Providing opportunities for students to engage in extra curricular activities that introduce them to varied and diverse experiences should not be regulated to students within the gifted or other exceptional learning programs due to budget contrasts. My students and I constitute a community of learners, which engage in social discourse in order to produce common understandings. Working toward this goal is not easy; providing students with the best possible learning environment begins with creating a classroom community, which offers each student a sense of belonging and purpose. We should be embracing the future, being present in the here and now but honoring and learning from our past.
