UAI Goes to Washington D.C.- Part 2
Funded Dec 29, 2018The trip our nation's capitol was an astounding success! From the moment we stepped off the bus at the Tidal Basin memorials, the students were enthralled with the history of Washington D.C. and surprised themselves with how much they already knew about our nation's development. Not only did the students attentively listen to the tour guide and investigate each memorial and site we saw, but they continued to ask questions about what they were seeing, extending their understanding of United States history and making this awesome experience even more meaningful.
After speaking with students on the trip home, their two favorite parts of this experience were watching the Changing of the Guard ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery and our time at the National Museum of African American History and Culture. Students wished that they had more time to explore both of these sites, since they resonated deeply with their own experience as predominately young women of color in the United States and as relatives of service members.
On the trip home, one student commented, "I'm very grateful for the once in a lifetime experience I was given to travel to Washington D.C. and see and experience things I never have before. For everyone that donated for us, thank you so much. I am so grateful because so many other kids don't get this opportunity." Another student stated, "It changed my life in a way, so thank you." Learning didn't stop when the bus returned to Brooklyn, however, as students continued to discuss their experiences and use this information to increase their understanding of United States history in preparation for the Regents exam this June. Thank you again for your generous donations, you made a huge difference in the lives of many students!”
With gratitude,
Ms. Judy
