We are very lucky to have 1-to-1 technology in the classroom which is encorporated throughout our curriculum. However, many of the students cannot afford headphones. I have a set of headphones I salvaged from a discard pile. For two years, the headphones have done the job but time has taken their toll. Many of the headphones are missing the comfort pieces or have a thick layer of packing tape holding it together. Students have expressed discomfort with the headphones. For some of the work that students do with reinforcing and practicing their foundational reading skills, being able to hear the sounds from the leveled reading support program correctly is very important. During our literacy block, students rotate through stations (meeting with me, partner practice, individual practice, word work and computer). As such, there is always a "buzz" in the classroom and it can make hearing the computer difficult, even when we are all using our quiet voices. Having headphones that are comfortable and clear would help students to stay on task during the computer station and help to support their overall literacy.
