Many of our great life lessons as adults can be learned through beautifully illustrated pages of a children's reading book. As a school counselor, whether I am doing 1:1 counseling, small group counseling, or teaching social emotional lessons in the classroom - reading a good book, with a meaningful social story has increased the effectiveness and enjoyment of each lesson. Learning social skills through stories have been used to help a variety of students of varying ages with autism, special needs, behavior management, and more. In addition, social skills through stories can help with new experiences, transitions, friendship skills, learning routines, and setting expectations. Many of our students receive that “light bulb” feeling when they hear a great story. While with some students, a simple conversation and lesson about a social skill is enough, others can fully benefit, learn, and grasp the main idea from listening to characters in a story go through those exact same motions. Being able to supplement and teach any social emotional lesson, whether it be with one student, a single class, or an entire school, is made that much more effective with the physical touch and feel of a good book. Your donation will help expand the limited library of social story books available to my students and enable me to continue a breath of freshness to each lesson, while keeping our students engaged – helping to create tomorrow’s leaders, from today’s readers.
