Our students love reading and listening to these stories and engaging in collaborative conversations with their peers. High quality, complex text engages students in the books and allows more opportunities for deep, rich conversation among students. The texts in this project are related to the curriculum and content students are learning as part of the fifth-grade classroom. Many of them are also familiar classics with important themes. Current research in reading shows us that the best way to close the achievement gap for our striving students is not by reading lower level texts, but rather, to provide them with high quality, grade-level texts that grow their ability to think and process complex material. By donating to our project, you will be contributing to improving the literacy and thinking skills of our students through high quality, complex, authentic texts at their grade level. Rather than reading excerpts of stories or contrived texts written for specific reading levels, we want to give kids authentic books they can enjoy from start to finish. Our students are so appreciative to receive books to read in the classroom. They get excited to hold the book in their hands and go on an adventure with the characters, read about far off places, or learn new information about the world around them.
