Enthusiastic Readers!
Funded Jan 27, 2020It's hard to put into words how grateful I am for your donation to my project. I am committed to providing students with all the opportunities possible to continue to expand their love for reading. The tools that you have funded will enable students to become life-long readers and learners.
Thank you, Thank you, Thank you! The news has just made my day! I can't wait to let my students know that we have gotten more books for our listening center. I can just hear their excitement. The listening center has become one of the most sought out center students enjoy and can't wait to go to.”

Hear It! Read It!
Funded Sep 24, 2019The listening center is one of the most popular centers in the classroom. Students look forward to listening different books on CDs. Although my students enjoy a read-aloud and shared reading, listening to books is a bit more personal. They are developing different skills, at their individual pace, that have been improving their reading levels, such as reading at a just-right pace (not too slow, not too fast), reading fluently (scooping up words instead of word-for-word), and intonation (change voices of characters to bring stories to life), to name a few.
After the reading mini-lesson, where students are taught a specific skill / strategy which they can use to grow as readers, and practice of the specific skill / strategy taught, students go into different reading centers, which include word study as well. The listening center is crucial and expected by students on a daily basis. Through these different activities, my student's love for reading has grown.
A particular student that comes to mind is a child who immigrated from a foreign country to the United States approximately a month ago. This student is learning the English language, the alphabet, common basic words (the, and), and communication. Although she enjoys everything in school and wants to be part of the classroom as a whole, this particular student enjoys listening to books, even though they are not at her current English level. When she is instructed to visit the listening center, her eyes light up. She sits in her seat quickly (it seems that she cannot get there soon enough), puts on the head phones and tracks every word in the book with her finger, while listening to the story. At times, I have seen her trying to say the words she is hearing and seeing simultaneously. This particular student has begun to speak in English already. It is evident that the listening center has made a huge impact in this child.
My students, as well as myself, are very grateful for this donation. Together, Donors Choose.org, the donors, and myself, are molding the future leaders of the world, one child at a time.”

Ms. Gonzalez
