Many of our students benefit from quieter settings, however with 17 very animated and spirited students it can be a challenge to meet all of their needs at once. Sound canceling headphones have proved to aid many of them in focusing and even calming down when they are frustrated or agitated. With a few headphones they can not only practice sharing but successfully get meaningful task done in a safe manner! Light sensitivity has been studied and shown that "those with autism have also been found to have physical differences in the structures of their central nervous systems. Furthermore, there is evidence that they also have a lower neurological threshold for environmental stimuli, including light. These physical changes contribute to the many visual and behavioral changes experienced by those on the autism spectrum." With softer lights we can alleviate some of the triggers that exist in ordinary classroom lighting. The body socks will help to relieve stress or anxiety and will act as an incentive to stay on task and even self correct their own behavior! Our goal is to continuously evolve our approach with our class to better suit their growing needs. With the tools at hand, they are sure to be a success and leave feeling confident about themselves and abilities!
