  • Out of My Heart

    Thank you so much for helping to fund my project for the class set of our novel, Out of my Heart. The students were so excited to read part 2 of Out of my Mind, one our favorite books to date. The story of Melody has stuck with us and has helping to bring about empathy in all of my students. The students read the novel, while participating in different activities. We had many deep classroom discussions about the novel and how it relates to our lives. Students were able to make connections to their own life and take away some life long lessons that I am sure they will pay forward in the future.”

When students make a connection between what is being taught and something in their lives, the learning begins. In my 20 years of teaching, one thing I have learned is that student learn best when it's relate able. They also like to be entertained! For this reason, I have chosen class sets of novels that touch current themes in my 4th graders lives. Novels that have characters connect with all my students. Through novels my students not only build on their reading skills, but they also are able to see good writing demonstrated. I can show how author's crafts like using figurative language, description, imagery, word choice, sentence structure, voice, and so on. The students can use what they read and apply it to their own writing.
