Having access to a variety of contemporary and relevant titles enhances the air in my language arts classroom. Already, my room is a literacy hub; every Friday we share our thoughts about and reflect on what we read. Often, these works are the springboard to our academic discussions, responsive writing pieces, and restorative practices. Because of their interactions with these written gems, my students are more confident and courageous communicators and independent readers. These powerful written pieces evokes my students into action; they responsibly blog, post, and speak out about injustice, poverty, discrimination, and mental health. Titles mirroring their lives and experiences develop scholars into brave and critically thinking advocates for themselves and their communities. Scholars produce their own pieces and products as a result: short stories, graphic art, songs, webisodes, and (even their own) clothing lines. Also increases in their achievement, improvements in their writing, and jumps in their reading levels (Lexile scores) encourage them to keep turning pages.
Keeping the classroom library supplied with a variety of high-interest books keeps my scholars engaged and helps to increase their written and spoken communication skills. It is important for students to continuously read themselves on the pages of books in our classroom library. Having these books offers them a choice and places examples of quality works of contemporary writing. This project aids the development of well-read, composed, and avid readers...and what could be better than that?
