  • The Wondrous World of Mathematics

    Funded Sep 4, 2019

My students were very excited to see and put to use the materials that they received from your donation. The folders and binders are tools they use to organize the work they put in their backpack. Boards and markers come in handy during small group instruction. The students love writing on them and erasing their work. They are able to solve problems on one side and graph points, lines, and shapes on the other side using different colored markers. The timer is used every day for what I call a do now or quick math. Students have five minutes to solve a problem when they come into class and must be prepared to discuss what they did and why when the timer goes off. The timer is really helpful because the numbers are big and can be seen from the back. I use the chart paper to create anchor charts for important concepts and post them so that my students can refer to them on an as needed basis. Many of them work better with visuals so I always try to draw them a diagram, graph, or table to bring what we are learning to life. Lastly, the black cart is used to organize and transport the many copies of worksheets I have to each of the various classrooms I teach in. Thank you so much for your generous donations. They are so helpful to everyone.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Bernabe

  • The Wonders of Mathematics at Students' Fingertips

    Funded Dec 19, 2018

My students from all three of my classes (two sections of 7th grade math and one section of 8th grade Algebra 1) started using the new materials at the beginning of the new year. Each period I try to do at least two problems that require the small, individual white boards, markers and erasers. I put a problem on the screen to set the tone for class and get their thinking started which either reviews what we learned the previous day or prepares them for what we are learning later that day. They get a few minutes to solve the problems on their own and when my timer goes off I ask them to "show". This allows me a chance to see what they are thinking and informs how I should proceed.

The students were so happy to see the new materials. Our previous markers were drying out and the boards they used were leftovers from a previous class so they were beaten and in poor condition. I also had complaints that students couldn't see the board I was working on due its position in the room (all the way to the left and partially blocked by the Smartboard) so the large movable board on wheels allows all my students to access information. Not only can they now see, I can create problems specifically for each group or part of the room based on their needs or I can hang anchor charts that show them how I would step through a problem.

Right now we are finishing up equations and inequalities for 7th grade and working with polynomials for 8th grade. Once that is done, we will begin refreshing content and practicing old problems as we prepare for the end of year state exams. Thank you again for your contributions! They are used on a daily basis to help these mathematicians grow.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Bernabe

This classroom project was brought to life by Someone Who Cares and 7 other donors.
I have a large classroom and the white board that works is all the way to one side. It would be helpful to have materials like the movable nest easel board that allow me to be more mobile and flexible. With this easel, I can go where I am needed most and dynamically change what I show to meet each group's needs. I also want students to not be afraid to try problems (even if they make mistakes) and show me what they think by proudly displaying work on individual dry erase whiteboards, with markers and erasers. I think these materials will get them to do just that and allow them to experiment before committing their thoughts to a paper they will turn in.
