  • Love for Literature

    I cannot say thank you enough for your generosity. The excitement and enthusiasm was immediate when I presented my students with our new book sets. The classroom was filled with chatter like, 'Cool, this is about soccer. I love soccer!', 'We have this author in the library.', and 'Wow! There's four, do you want to read this one with me?' Our project included a set of four of each new title and new authors. Some students chose to read a new book with a partner or small group. It touched my heart to see every one of my students with their nose buried in a book, even carrying them through the hallways because they couldn't put them down! We'll begin literature circles soon, giving students an opportunity to practice deepening their comprehension and expanding their vocabulary. I have two students in particular, each of whom would be considered a 'struggling reader' and who aren't typically very motivated to read. Seeing these two boys' faces light up with joy at reading a book with friends, on their level, was such a special moment..

My hope is to captivate even my reluctant readers with books like Jump Shot by Tiki Barber and The Terrible Two by Mac Barnett. Providing students with new sets of books that are fun, funny and relevant to their interests will hopefully rekindle a joy for reading in the classroom. Giving students an opportunity to collaborate with classmates and communicate about their reading experiences will surely spark a fire for reading. Also, many of these books are part of a series, so once the students get a taste for what they like, they can seek out new titles by the same author.

About my class
