Imagine being the kid who struggles to read. It impacts every subject area and every part of a child's school day. My fourth and fifth grade students have spent years working hard to develop their phonemic awareness and literacy skills. They are aware that they have some challenges to overcome in order to be life-long readers. They are willing to invest the time, energy, and grit required to learn and utilize the most effective reading strategies. They are highly motivated to become better readers so that they will be prepared for middle school. Everyday, they come to my reading group ready to do what it takes to make progress. My students respond well to technology; therefore, it would be an awesome supplement to their multi-sensory reading intervention. The online learning products that I've selected would definitely keep these students engaged. The iPad will be used to provide hands-on practice through phonics and sight word apps, as well as track progress. Flocabulary is an online tool that uses hip-hop to get kids excited about learning. My students will benefit from using this program because it offers alternate ways to learn. This technology can be used to touch lives by adding to our efforts to develop readers. Imagine these students going to middle school as confident readers!
