Being a librarian in a STEAM recognized campus, I know how important it is for my students to be 'future ready' in a world that seems to be driven and dominated by technology. Our campus offers students a Minecraft Lab to assist them with coding and an Engineering Room where students can build and create things through the use of LEGOs. As for the library, students get to continue with STEAM learning through the various makerspace activities I provide for them. As for what takes place in the classroom, our campus is incorporating STEAM curriculum and, with our campus being 1:1, many teachers are introducing students to various apps like Flipgrid - and they love it! However, I want to provide my students with other opportunities that will take them beyond a screen and give them a chance to interact with the world around them. By incorporating a naturebrary and providing students with kits filled with items meant to assist them as they inquire about the world in their backyard, I am providing them and their families a chance to interact outdoors. Students will have the chance to view insects as they go through various stages of their life cycle, create inquiries based on their observations, and then use the naturebrary kits to answer those inquiries. As the library is recognized for being a hub full of resources and information, students should be able to have access to all types of resources and information - whether it's from a Google search or the natural world.
