Due to the emphasis of state mandated testing most of the science lessons that many third grade students around our state get are so heavily tied to reading nonfiction science text and answering questions straight from them. What better way to learn about bones than being able to uncover them and classify them yourself? Studying the bones of the human body is a major science topic, and while the bones in the owl pellets are not human, they share similar characteristic (names, shape, purposes, etc.) that will help the student to make the deeper connection to the materials. I recall doing the owl pellet dissection when I was in school and it is a memory that has lasted with me. My students love hands-on activities and owl pellet dissection is all hands-on!
