  • All About Art

    Funded Dec 30, 2019

I teach a k-2 6:1:1 class. Most of my students are diagnosed with Autism. All of my students are nonverbal and we utilize a Picture Exchange Communication system in order for them to convey wants and needs. A common thought is that people with Autism "think in pictures." And therefore art is essential for my students to express themselves.

The "All About Art" project was paramount for my students to do just that. We asked for paint, glitter, textured brushes, tissue paper and stamp pads. We have been using these items since the very moment we opened the box. It has been transformative in every lesson I teach from math to phonics.

Although my students cannot verbally tell you "thank you" I know they cherish these items with every smile and burst of excitement when I place these items out to use. We cannot put into words how appreciative we are for your support. Your generosity has given us more than you could possibly know. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Danielle

  • Excited for Essentials!

    Funded Dec 14, 2019

I teach a k-2 6:1:1 class. Most of my students are diagnosed with Autism. All of my students are nonverbal and we utilize a Picture Exchange Communication system in order for them to convey wants and needs. My students rely on a color coding system as well as visual cues to help organize their thoughts and help navigate their day.

The "Excited for Essentials" project was paramount for my students to do just that. We asked for colored paper, highlighters, laminating paper and colored clipboards. We have been using these items since the very moment we opened the box. It has been transformative in helping students follow their daily schedule as well easily accessing materials.

Although my students cannot verbally tell you "thank you" I know they cherish these items with every smile and every time they are able to accomplish something in our classroom independently because of these materials. We cannot put into words how appreciative we are for your support. Your generosity has given us more than you could possibly know. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Danielle

  • Mad About Manipulatives

    Funded Dec 3, 2019

I teach a k-2 6:1:1 class. Most of my students are diagnosed with Autism. All of my students are nonverbal and we utilize a Picture Exchange Communication system in order for them to convey wants and needs. My students rely on hands on manipulatives in order for them to understand concepts taught to them. As the saying goes, "Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime." These manipulatives have brought literacy and math lessons to life and gave a sense of independence over their learning.

The "Mad about Manipulatives" project was paramount for my students to do just that. We asked for color discovery boxes, touch and learn picture library, button size sorting box and my first match ups.

Children use their senses to explore their world around them. The best practice is when students use hands-on experiences and engage their senses. Learning opportunities that promote children to use their senses is paramount to brain development as it helps build nerve connections in the brain’s pathways. Simply put this leads to supporting language development, social interaction and problem-solving skills. Please help fund a water/sensory table as well as sand trays and sensory sticks for our class. The class is comprised of six K-2 aged students on the Autism Spectrum. These items would help promote social skills as well as critical thinking.
