New York City is one of the most diverse places in the world! Our school is teaching a unit on cultural heritage, diversity and multiculturalism. We serve a high-needs population of students who have multiple, severe disabilities. All of our students come from diverse backgrounds. We would like to use tablets to research and learn about where each student's family comes from. In this STEM project, students will research and learn about the country their family is from and create a digital project that we will be able to present on the Smart Board. We will have a culminating event where we share out and learn about each other's cultures and family backgrounds. Teachers will also participate as a way to expose the school community to different cultures and backgrounds. By incorporating tablets in this lesson, we will be able to engage students, get them excited about learning about their culture and create fantastic projects! The tablets will allow us to incorporate media and research we would otherwise not be able to obtain. Many students come from homes that do not have access to tablets/computers. For this reason, it is essential to be able to provide a device for each student, so we can continue to learn and close the achievement gap. Collectively as a school we are trying to put a device in the hands of each student, so we can research, learn and grow as a diverse, multicultural community of learners!
