Imaginary Trip to Oaxaca

Funded Jan 3, 2019

It is always a blessing and a wonderful sight to see the students' eyes engage in reading. The majority of the students have never read a novel in Spanish. Yet, they are looking forward to this new experience and willing to try.

We are focusing on character analysis. They are learning to transfer the techniques and skills they have learned in their English/Humanities classes such as imagery, metaphor, setting, plot, and use them in Spanish. I provide them with a reading guide that will help them choose a character to analyze and once they do, the guide will also assist them in looking for key elements in their analysis.

The students are focused and engaged in the reading. The students relate to the social and emotional issues presented in the reading. They ask questions and have had a strong connection to the characters, especially the main character. I have provided them with a vocabulary worksheet to help them understand new words. They also discuss the reading with their peers and sometimes have disagreements on their opinions. Once they read the weekly assigned chapters, the students share their findings and discuss questions I have provided for them by recording their answers. When I hear the audio, I am impressed with their comprehension and their language fluency.

There are two students who have demonstrated a deep interest in the reading and wanting to know more about the characters. These students deeply question every chapter they read and are interested in figuring out the whys.”

With gratitude,
